Lario Reti Holding S.p.A. has been the in-house manager of the Integrated Water Service for the entire Province of Lecco since 1 January 2016. It manages over 2,000 systems in the territory of 85 Municipalities, serving approximately 350,000 inhabitants and since 1 December 2018 throughout the entire territory of the Municipality of Introbio, in Valsassina, has started the second phase of the pilot project for the remote reading of water meters.
In operational terms, it will involve creating the network for reading the consumption data that will be transmitted from the meters, the first infrastructure of this type in the territory managed by Lario Reti Holding.

The network, made up of equipment for data reception (called concentrators), will be of the “LPWan LoRa (Low Powered Wide Area Network LoRa)” type: a technology developed specifically to offer optimal coverage to devices that require very limited data exchange over long periods of time.


It is therefore a standard designed to drastically reduce energy consumption and maintain the efficiency of the network over time.

The next phase, expected between January and April 2019, will be the installation (on each meter) of the data reading and transmission instruments, which will become operational by May 2019.
The project began in summer 2017, with the mapping and replacement of all the meters in the country (over 600).

During this phase, the serial number, geolocation, dimensions and conditions of each meter were recorded and in March 2018 work began for the adaptation of niches and meter housing wells that needed an overhaul.

The total investment for the activity is close to €400,000 and will be positively affected - for the portion relating to data transmission and reception equipment - by the recovery of the tax credit for innovative projects.

The advantages:

The remote reading network will be proprietary, i.e. it will not rely on existing networks such as fixed or mobile telephone networks and will allow:

• Efficient measurement of water consumption through constant and highly periodic readings

• Save on reading costs by avoiding sending staff at customers' homes to carry out the reading

• Highlight anomalous consumption due to leaks, network problems or abusive consumption.

Furthermore, since it is a fixed infrastructure, the network may be used for other purposes by Lario Reti Holding, the municipal administration or other companies.

Possible purposes are, for example, reading the pressures in the network sewerage, the control of public lighting, the transmission of video surveillance and air quality data, the possibility of equipping older residents with "alarm devices" to be used in the event of a medical emergency and the provision of “intelligent” waste collection bins.

The Introbio aqueduct network:

The Introbio aqueduct network is divided into two districts, which have been equipped with flow meters and pressure at the critical intake and interconnection points.

There are 619 users, 60% concentrated in the northern district, where the historic center is located.

The users are mostly domestic (in particular second homes) but there are also 38 users of a condominium/commercial type and an industrial user.

These last two categories are responsible for 40% of the Municipality's total annual water consumption (equal to approximately 114,000 m3) and are concentrated in the northern district.

There are 10 km of adduction network and approximately 13.5 km of distribution network. The Municipality is served by a single tank - equipped with a UV disinfection system - which is in turn supplied by 4 high-altitude sources.

The levels, flow rates and pressures upstream and downstream of the tank are measured via Lario Reti Holding's proprietary remote control system.

The hardware solution:

Between June and September 2018, the tender called by Lario Reti Holding took place, which saw the supply entrusted to MiDo Srl of Ferrara, a company founded in 2014 with the aim of developing monitoring and remote reading systems for the world of water.

The solution chosen by Lario Reti Holding involves an architecture based on LoRaWan technology (low consumption narrow band) in which the final nodes - optical readers installed directly on traditional meters - send consumption to an area gateway concentrator via the MiDoMet transmitter < a href="/prodotti-e-servizi/midomet-lora-pulse">Radio Pulse Transmitter.

This is a Plug&Play radio module with double digital input.
Thanks to a LoRa® 868 Mhz Wireless RF Transceivers module it transmits at a distance exceeding several km depending on the obstacles encountered (houses , vegetation and roughness of the terrain).

The battery with which the final nodes are equipped has a minimum duration of 10 years with 24 readings per day (over 87,000 total readings).

Within the municipal territory of Introbio, the installation of 3 LoRa geteway concentrators is planned, based on the field tests carried out.

These concentrators send the reading data via LTE modem interface to the Cloud management system, a LoRa server.

This server forwards the data received from the concentrators to the application-server, where the Saas cloud platform resides (software as to service). This platform is responsible for the presentation, analysis and use of reading data, their archiving, automatic calculation of the water balance and timely reporting in the event of alarms.
